Daily Multivitamin / Multi-Mineral Formula

Also known as: MVM · Multi-nutrient supplement · Daily essentials formula

1 PMID anchor · BLOOD · METABOLISM · NEURO · CARDIO · Last reviewed 2026-06-04

Mechanism of action

  • Provides foundational micronutrient adequacy across the RDA/NRV matrix
  • Insurance approach to dietary gaps (vitamins A · C · D · E · K · B-complex · minerals)
  • No single targeted mechanism — relies on individual nutrient claims when claim space is needed

Molecular + tissue targets

  • Baseline micronutrient adequacy
  • Dietary gap insurance for at-risk groups (older adults, pregnancy, restricted diets)

Dosage range

One serving daily per label (typically RDA/NRV range across the matrix). Sesso 2012 PMID 23117775 JAMA Physicians Health Study II 11-year RCT (n = 14,641 male physicians ≥ 50) found no benefit of daily multivitamin on the primary major cardiovascular event composite (HR 1.01, 95% CI 0.91-1.10) — honest framing: multivitamin is not a cardiovascular preventive in well-nourished populations

Safety notes

Most formulas remain within tolerable upper intake levels for vitamins and minerals when taken as one serving; check that the iron content matches age / sex requirements (iron is not indicated in postmenopausal women or men without diagnosed deficiency); vitamin A from preformed retinol can accumulate at higher doses
